Location

The Quinta do Futuro is located in the back country of the Algarve approximately 17 Km from the coast. The surrounding landscape is partly wild and untouched with orange groves mixed in throughout. A place of complete tranquillity, with few exceptions. Two small convenience stores are about 2 Km away and only 9 Km to reach the old Moorish town of Silves an attractively sleepy place with cobbled streets and historic buildings.

Faro Airport is a 45-60 minute drive, the shortest route being a toll road.

Beaches & Surroundings

The nearest south coast is about 17 km away and offers the long, flat sandy beach of Galé as well as many smaller bays (to be reached by small footpaths). The somewhat rough and adventurous west coast has a longer journey of about 55 minutes via the toll road. The trip is worthwhile though. Fascinating rock formations, watching the long swell with windsurfers and the exotic vegetation make it a sight to see.

Depending on the season, various festivals take place in nearby towns. We are happy to provide information about current happenings. A zoo in Algoz (approximately 6 Km) and a large number of golf courses can be reached in a breeze. Gypsy and flea markets can be found nearby on Sundays and Mondays.

Food & Drink

An grand variety of restaurants and cafes are located near by. It is difficult to make a recommendation, as the quality should be tested again and again. We will do our best to advise you on local restaurants when you are here and we learn more about your preferences.

Most importantly, let your day be sweetened by stopping at a pasteleria and enjoy a bica or galão and a pasteis de nata or other goodies.

The Bica (or espresso) costs around 80-90 cents and can be enjoyed several times a day to increase the holiday feeling immensely.

History

The more than 100 year old Quinta do Futuro was bought by us, Gudrun and Gerhard Witt, in 1998 from a Dutch master gardener. There were three greenhouses for growing plants and an outdoor area for seasonal plants, trees and palms on the site. After the nursery was given up and the greenhouses were dismantled, we redesigned the property.

Attention was paid to drought-resistant plants and crop such as pitanga or brazil cherry, raspberries, blackberries and various citrus fruits have been planted throughout.

Over time, the quinta was expanded to 5 hectares as we acquired surrounding property. Alfarobeira (carob) and Medronheiro (strawberry) trees were planted on the newly acquired land.

Nature surrounding the Quinta was made accessible by newly created paths. The olive trees, some of which are very old, were rejuvenated by us and encouraged to grow smaller.

Our latest project, a photovoltaic system, was built to support renewable energy and make the Quinta a little more self-sufficient.
